City leaders in Pine Bluff are calling on churches to help spur economic development and improve the city's image.  It’s a new component of an already existing program.

When police found a 57-year-old man dead inside of a club house earlier this year, it marked the start of more than a dozen homicides in Pine Bluff. Two months later a 20-year-old shot was and killed at 9th Ave. and Ash Street in the wee hours of the morning. Neither case has been solved.

Another unsolved homicide happened on Virginia St., police found a 21-year-old man dead inside of a car. Witnesses told authorities they knew something wasn't right when the car was parked on the street with smoke coming from the hood.

Crime is one reason why the police department is strengthening its relationship with pastors like Rev. R.J. Lightsey.  He's meeting with the police chief and other clergy to help combat crime and promote Pine Bluff.

“A person who would use the term calling our city ‘Crime Bluff’ probably doesn't live here. Secondly I would question what it is they are doing or have done to make a positive contribution to the city,” Lightsey said.

Police hope the contribution of churches will help.  "We are faith based and we just hope these other faith based agencies can help us get out in to the community and spread the word," Rawlinson added.

"Crimes are committed by people and as you change people's habits and lifestyles, as you give them more hope and tools to live with, as you give them more opportunities, you can reduce crime,” Lightsey said.

Clergy members will meet with police and fire representatives Wednesday morning in hopes their influence will outshine the work of criminals.  Lt. Rawlinson says crime is down 10 % from this time last year and the police department is noticing a drastic decrease in burglaries.

And one more thing and then I'll shut up...lol..it's not black people OR white people that are the problem. It's these people that don't believe in spanking a kid's butt when they do something wrong. Wake up people Time Out's don't do it. My daddy took time out of his day to whip me and my sister's BUTT! But you know because of that we stayed out of trouble. These kids that don't get diciplined are the ones that get into trouble b/c they know that they can get away with it without getting punished!!!

I was born and raised in Pine Bluff and it was safe up until around 1996 or so. Then it seems like it just went downhill from there. I think our judicial system is just messed up! I moved when I was 20 because there were no decent jobs and no decent places to live. My parents still live there but only b/c my mom can't retire yet. LOL as soon as she does they are OUT of there it's so bad. I think that if we would toughen up our criminal system and go back to hanging people when there was more than three credible witnesses that saw you do what you did or cutting someone's hand off when they get caught stealing we wouldn't have such problems. I know that sounds awfu but think about the crime rate back then compared to the crime rate NOW. LOL

If the Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's of the world would spend their time trying to uplift cities like this, maybe there would be a chance for them. When you play the race/victim card all the time, you eventually become the biggest loser. Run off all those racist white folks and you end up with no tax base, a pit of crime and corruption, and no one else to blame but yourselves...

Even the roads to Crime Bluff are crappy. Have you driven to the Bluff and back on I-530? Arkansas should be embarassed for the town and it's roads, I am.

Crime Bluff used to be a good place to live, back in 1985. I'm glad I'm not living there anymore. It will never be like it was,all the good people are getting out and letting the bad take it over. They say its the gateway to the south, it's more like the black eye of our state.

Probably the reason why there is a reduce amount of crime is because people fear reporting it. why should people risk calling in to report a theft of property when the cops can not get the perp. no one wants to testify because the criminal will probably get away with it and come after you. Get real... Stay indoors and hope your not next. Crime Bluff out.

Hahaha good luck with that Pine Bluff! I agree with Russ. Except, then the trash would move to Little Rock. Though, to be PC, I feel for the good people that are stuck in that cesspool!

I'll call it Crime Bluff, and my contribution was to move away from it, so my kids could play out side with out me watching over them and running off the thugs and vandals

The only way pine Bluff can get a positive image is to bulldoze the whole city down and start over.
