HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Hot Springs police say a 14-year-old boy home alone shot a 17-year-old boy in the face, ending an attempted burglary.

Police say they responded to a call about 7:30 a.m. Monday concerning a shooting and learned about the attempted home invasion.

Police Cpl. McCrary Means tells the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record that an 18-year-old and two 17-year-olds tried to burglarize the home before the 14-year-old fired at them, hitting one of the 17-year-olds.

Means says the two uninjured suspects dragged their wounded colleague down the street, left him in a car and tried to flee, but police apprehended the pair moments later.

Means says the injured suspect is in critical condition at a Little Rock hospital.

He says the two other suspects face felony burglary charges.

I have 3 children 10, 8, and 3. My 10 year old lives with her mother and my 2 boys live with me. I have been in the Army for the past 10 years and I have deployed to Iraq 3 times now. I know the impact that taking a life has on a person and I would never wish that on anyone especially my children. However, I have just started teaching my 8 year old how to handle and shoot a gun. I want him to have the knowledge and common sense that you need in order to safely handle a weapon. My hope is that when the time comes that my wife and I leave him home alone that he will be able (god forbid that it should happen) to handle the situation as well as this 14 year old did. When my 3 year old gets older I will also teach him as well. Concerned Father

My son stays home alone when I have to work late. he knows fully how to use our loaded gun and I have told him it is okay to defend himself in our home...he saw this on the news and was bothered by it...I had to explain just as this world is full of evil adults, there are also as many teens. I am thankful that 14 year old in his home wasn't hurt & pray that NOTHING happens to him as legally. Let this be a lesson to all the thieves & criminals in general out there....WE WILL DEFEND OUR SELVES, HOMES & PROPERTY!!!!

I think it's not the 14 year old people need to worry about. He took care of himself well. It's time for these little criminals parents to start telling little Jr. you could get your face blown off breaking into peoples houses. There are plenty of people that will shoot your butt off for breaking into their homes.

News Flash: The state with the most gun control laws has a murder rate over four times higher than the state with the LEAST gun control. And this story is a good example why! My hat is off to the 14 year old (good aim) but also to the parents who provided him with arms. Good job!

I am so happy that this you teen was not killed or hurt. This child is of legal age to stay home alone. I was a latch key kid myself, coming home at 12 years old and obeying my parents not breaking any rules of the house. Of course, during my time, the neighborhood watched out for a child's safety. This child was scared just like you and I would have been and he did only what he knew to do- SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just hate his missed the other two.

This is a brave young man. We all should applaud this young man for his actions. We need more like him to rid our neighborhoods of these thugs.

JC1998, I would imagine he was home alone because #1 a lot of schools did not reconvene until today and #2 If I am not mistaken it is legal to leave a child home alone after age 13. So if the parents or guardians had to work then they probably left him home alone.
