As your children head back to school this week, police across the state will also hit the streets. Polic are going to be cracking down to make sure you pay attention to the school zone signs.
"We're going to run a zero tolerance in the school zone," says Bryant Police Chief, Tony Coffman. He adds, “We want to keep the kids safe whether it's on school campus or at the bus stops where kids get on and off the buses.”
Officers will be doing that by cracking down on people speeding in school zones.
"All of my CID staff, more officers, aside from the two officers we have assigned to the school, we're going to have several extra officers, myself included that will be out in the school zones watching," Coffman said.
Amanda Aguilar is doing last minute back to school shopping with her daughter Hailey, but something she can't buy is safety. She says having more police on the street as her daughter goes to school gives her piece of mind.
"It keeps our kids safe because a lot of people do speed through school zones so that's good that they're out there," says Aguilar.
“We want everyone to have a happy and school year this year and we're going to do everything here at the police department to ensure that happens, says Chief Coffman.
Extra police will also be on hand to deal with traffic during the first few days of school. Chief Coffman also tells us officers are prepared to write tickets which can be costly and cause your insurance to go up.
Typically the speed limit is 25 miles per hour in school zones and slows to 15 miles per hour at cross walks. It's also illegal to pass a stopped school bus while its lights are flashing.
