Police search for Arkansas escaped convict

Authorities say an Arkansas state prison inmate who had a court date somehow escaped from a sheriff's transport van and is on the loose.
NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say an Arkansas state prison inmate who had a court date somehow escaped from a sheriff's transport van and is on the loose.

Jackson County sheriff's deputies say William McCoy escaped Tuesday from the transport van. A woman who answered the phone at the sheriff's office said all deputies were in the field searching for McCoy.

Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said the 46-year-old was in the custody of Crawford County sheriff's deputies to attend a court hearing. McCoy is serving a 20-year sentence at the prison system's East Arkansas Regional Unit at Brickeys.

McCoy was convicted of two escape charges out of Independence County in 1998, as well as drug charges in Crawford and Lee counties.
