It's easy to miss, especially if you’re zooming by, but a little black box could end up getting you a speeding ticket. It’s called the “speed tracker” and it’s a new tool the Bryant Police Department is using to catch speeders.
"We can identify the street, the time frame, and how fast people are traveling over the speed limit," explains Bryant Police Chief Tony Coffman.
This is how it works. The device records how fast your driving and when. Police then hook up a PDA and download all of the information. "[Then] you can actually place an officer at that particular place, at that particular time and try to catch people coming through there," says Coffman.
Coffman added this helps save time and money on manpower.
"Early morning, especially when people want to go to work, or when school traffic gets out. I mean, people just fly," says Fran Moseley who has lived in Bryant for 20 years. She says speeders have become a problem. "They need to slow down. You don't have to stand here very long and you will see some people really speeding."
Police hope this will help. "This is just another tool in our box. We're not out there to get any points or anything. We're just out there to keep everybody safe," says Coffman.
Right now, Bryant only has one of these speed trackers. But this black box is portable. If you have problems with speeders in your neighborhood, call the police and they'll move it to one of your streets.
