LITTLE ROCK, AR – The American Red Cross is opening four emergency shelters for those who lost power in the Christmas snowstorm.

The Red Cross will have cots, blankets, food, and beverages at:

  • Bishop Park Community Center at 6401 Boone Road in Bryant.
  • Northside Church of Christ at 917 N East Street in Benton.
  • North Little Rock Community Center at 2700 Willow Street in North Little Rock
  • Jacksonville Community Center at 5 Municipal Drive in Jacksonville.

People going to the shelter should remember to bring prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, toiletries, important documents and other comfort items. Also remember items needed for infants and children, such as diapers, formula, and toys, along with any special things for family members who are elderly or disabled.

In Hot Springs, the First Church of Nazarene at 3804 Central Ave will serve as a warming center for those who have lost power. It will be open from 6pm to 8am. There will be no food served and pets are not allowed.

A lot of us older people, and others, will not evacuate unless some provision is made for our pets' safety, too. I suggest an area in the shelter be set up to allow pets as long as they are contained in carriers. I also know that both Petsmart and Petco have been generous in other states during disasters, and often will help provide empty carriers for such use. My dog is very elderly, and I just couldn't leave him to suffer while I'm made comfortable.
