LITTLE ROCK, AR - This home, built in the 1940s, now has a modern touch. It's hard to believe it used to be an eyesore on Harrison Street. But not anymore.

"This neighborhood has so much history in the city of Little Rock," Community Development Program Officer Barrett Allen said.

The university district development bought this house and two others in an effort to get people to move back to this once-sprawling area around UALR.

Project Officer Barrett Allen says revitalization is a must.

"It's known as midtown. It's known as the melting pot,” Allen said. “The university district sits right center of the city where different cultures, ethnicities come together."

Allen accepted this $24,000 check from three local banks to beautify more homes in the University District.
Since the program started in 2008, its goal has been to increase home ownership by selling them at affordable prices.

"I'm five minutes from church,” Homeowner Natasha Russell said. “I like that. I can catch the freeway and be almost anyway in LR in 15 minutes."

Natasha Russell is the first to buy a house from the organization. Not only does she like it because she's close to everything, but she's now on the path to living the American dream.

"I know that I'm building wealth and I'm investing in something that my son can have later on," Russell said.

I'm with you pat! My deck is falling apart, the oven doesn't work anymore, I need some plumbing work done, and some new carpet. Hey Uncle Ark, I could use a little revitalizing around here! Guess my neighborhood doesn't fit the bill. Wonder why.

I would like to know more about this "check" for $24000 to revitalize. That sounds interesting. My house could use some revitalizing...windows and roof, kitchen floor.

I listen to police dispatch 24/7. There isn't a decent neighborhood left in Little Rock...like they were when I was young and we never locked our doors, kids played outside after dark, adults walked the street at night. Little Rock is ruined. BUILD A 10000 BED PRISON WITH CONCRETE BLOCKS, PLAIN JANE, AND LOCK ALL OF THE TROUBLEMAKERS UP...THEN WE COULD BRAG. NOOOOOOOO WE NEED A WORLD CLASS BRIDGE, LIKE OUR "BIG DAM BRIDGE" AND OUR "MOBILE HOME PRES LIBRARY"...Little Rock has no class anymore. The only way you could "sell" the ualr neighborhood would be to lie to the buyer. Sorry, just being real.
