Road crews prep the highways

Crews are preparing the roads for drivers ahead of winter weather expected to hit Arkansas Monday morning by spraying treatment on bridges and overpasses to help keep sleet, snow, or freezing rain from adhering to the surface.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Crews are preparing the roads for drivers ahead of winter weather expected to hit Arkansas Monday morning by spraying treatment on bridges and overpasses to help keep sleet, snow, or freezing rain from adhering to the surface.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spent part of Sunday pre-treating the roads and will be back out again starting at midnight to help make the Monday morning commute a little easier.

Randy Ort with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says crews are being pro-active and taking measures now to prepare for what could come. "In this case we had about 48 hours notice ahead of time to be able to get a lot of pre-treating done. We use a liquid chloride or a liquid calcium chloride on bridges and overpasses."

That treatment won't keep ice from forming, but it will prevent ice from sticking to the roadways, making it easier to clear off the surface. At sunrise crews will start sanding and salting the roads, exits and on-ramps to help drivers with traction and to help melt the ice. Ort says drivers are warned to be cautious in particular problem spots. "Any elevated surface, any place where the roadway gets above the ground, where the cold air is on top and below is where it's going to freeze first."

Ort urges drivers to slow down, be cautious, and allow extra driving time. "If you don't have to get out in a situation like this, don't. We think this is going to be a quick event and will be over in 24-36 hours." Road crews will be out as long as necessary until the winter weather passes.

The Highway Department says drivers should not drive directly behind trucks treating the roads. Keep a safe distance and allow the trucks to have a chance to do their work.
