BAUXITE, AR – The owner of Shaw Recycling in Bauxite was given 34 citations for failing to maintain records of those who sold scrap metal to him, according to the Benton Police Department.

Bobby Shaw, 54, was served a search warrant Monday afternoon by the newly created Saline County Scrap Metal Task Force. Arkansas law requires Scrap Metal Dealers to maintain very detailed records of those who sell them non-ferrous material, to include thumbprints, photographs, photocopied identification, and license plate numbers.

The Task Force was created in response to the abundance of scrap metal thefts in recent years. Shaw Recycling was target due to numerous complaints about their business practices, according to the police.

The Task Force is made up of officers from Benton Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Bauxite Police Department, IRS, Union Pacific Railroad Police, Bryant Police Department, and the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Good!!! he was enabling the copper thieves, it's ashame they don't have any evidence to get him on "theft by receiving" too..Unless you STOLE it, you won't mind showing your i.d and fingerprints.

I see your point Butch. But things that are dumped should be able to be picked up and taken to the scrap yard, as long as one has ID. And one would assume that if you have the vehicle to haul the stuff, one would have a DL. I spent a few months in the late 80's in San Antonio doing just that for a living, scrapping. But we didn't steal from people. We drove around, picked up stuff on the side of the road, and if we spotted a "gold mine" on someone's place, we asked permission to haul it off. I have a friend that just tore my brothers burned out trailer down for the metal, unburned framing, and other metal. It is sad that thieves have made it more difficult for honest scrappers. Having to show ID for your cans is inane.

Butch54 - What am I missing here? Why can't you (or anyone for that matter) take those stove, washers, etc. to a scrapper? I thought the law only read that the seller had to provide a photo ID and fingerprint. Am I missing something?

saline county police will only get off there butts if thy smell a way thay can make money in a big fine an can get tv time theres a way to stop this get off there rear ends an patrol catch them in te act but how about the poor working man whose stuff get stole while at work are they less inportant than the ussines owner there was a man on my streetwhen i lived in benton kids been in prison once but lat ten years i watched them come arrestt him about fify time n hes out an hour later ive been told he tells them on other crooks an the let him go i used to sit on my pourch an watch him unload his car from his nightly raids an yes i told cops but who cares

The real shame here is the fact that the poor and down and out person can't even get out and salvage the cast away or dumped metal. I live on a road that dead ends a half a mile form my house. We get lots of dumpers. Stoves, washers, dryers, and other stuff. Scrapping people used to pick it up. That's over.

If one decides to run a business in an unlawful manner, take the right to run a business away from them. Get them where it hurts, the pocketbook.

Exactly ArkYank, these guys can only compete with the legal guys like Almon and Tannenbaum if they buy the stolen stuff, hope the fine is a killer
