LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would ban non-traditional body art and skin implants.

The bill's sponsor, Senator Missy Irvin of Mountain View, wants to limit body art procedures, particularly scarification and dermal implants.

By a 26-4 vote, the Senate moved to outlaw scarification, a procedure involving the scarring of the skin using heat to form a tattoo without ink, and implants that place ornaments under the skin.

The bill now goes to the House.

@TruthTeller - I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that you do not have any tattoos or body modification? If you did, then you would know that the statement you made about employment opportunities for people with said modifications was completely erroneous. Believe it or not, the world has come a long way in the direction of acceptance, and many of us have jobs that are far better than minimum wage jobs. You would be surprised at how many "professionals" you deal with every day have modifications, piercings, tattoos, or scarification. As for saying that people who have any of the above should not be eligible for assistance of any kind... well, that is just ignorant and falls right into the vein of all of the other discriminating "ism's" out there. While it is true that there are many people out there who abuse the system, there are also many people out there who work their butt off for years and get displaced because of company bankruptcy or some other circumstances. Those people, tattooed/modified or not, have paid just as much (if not MORE)as you have into the system and deserve the right to assistance if a bit of misfortune comes their way. You sir need to educate yourself a bit better in these matters before opening your mouth about them. As long as people keep voting officials into office based off of superficial issues that are full of glitter and lights in an effort to mask the issues that hold actual importance, we will keep facing ignorant legislature such as this, and tax money will be spent frivolously. It is up to the people to educate themselves, and since that largely does not take place, things do not change. People in general have NO CLUE what they are voting for, or how to scratch beyond the surface to do so. This is another clear-cut example of that. Or maybe they are just too lazy to actually care?

Good news is this legislature will only have this session before they are voted out of office! ACLU is going to have a field day in Arkansas, and it will cost the taxpayers a ton of money. @eastark, republicans and democrats are all about more government, don't let them fool you. The party who wants government out of everyones life is the Libertarian Party.

While I think you have to be crazy to do that to yourself, I disagree with the government prohibiting it. What I would like to see is a bill stating that such actions prevent one from receiving government assistance. After all, if you want to do something that almost guarantees the best job you'll ever get will pay minimum wage, then don't expect me to help support your stupidity.

Well said JeremyN. Can't believe our lawmakers are focused on something as inane as this when there are so many other more important issues that need to be addressed. I don't have any tat's, but my younger brother has enough for the whole family; including a heart on his chest with an old girlfriends name in it - dumb mistake he won't make again! LOL Hey Senator; don't tell me what I can and can't do if I ain't hurting anyone! Take your bill and put it where the sun don't shine; if your head isn't in the way!

This measure will result in a legal headache for law enforcement officials. People are people; they will find a way to express their individuality. If it is deemed illegal, taboo, or is just plain frowned upon, it will be all the more alluring to the younger people. Why do our law makers want to focus on things they cannot possibly regulate? Why do they want to continuously back away from issues which desperately need to be addressed such as; the economy, the lack of protection for our schools, the lack of funding for our police departments and prison systems, the lack of incentives for business start-up which leads to a lack of employment opportunities for our citizens, and dozens of other issues that really need to be resolved. I am ashamed that our governing officials cannot do a better job of setting priorities. Arkansas, as well as America, deserves better! WE THE PEOPLE DESERVE BETTER!!!

Laws shouldn't be based off of assumptions, especially when it concerns something medical. we should strive to help people instead of making it harder for anyone to recieve medical help. The whole idea of wanting to hinder someone's chance to get appropiate medical services when they need them because you don't like or agree with a personal choice they have made that has nothing to do with you is nothing short of hatred, bigotry, and self-centeredness...but I repeat myself.
