Jurors have a lot on their minds as they have to determine Curtis Vance’s punishment.  After a 30 minute break following the guilty verdict, the sentencing phase began Wednesday night.

The jury now must sentence Vance to either the death penalty or life in prison without parole; those are their only choices in a capital murder conviction.

The prosecution in this sentencing phase started trying to convince the jury of aggravating circumstance that would warrant the death penalty. In this case those include; that Vance committed the crime in a cruel manner, for money, to avoid arrest and that he committed a prior violent felony. That's why they again called Mariana rape victim Kristen Edwards to the stand. Edwards was raped earlier in 2008 and DNA found at the rape scene that matched DNA found in Anne Pressly’s home after her attack. That trial hasn't happened yet.

The prosecution also called Patti Cannady, Pressly's mother, who testified to a tearful jury that when Anne died, part of her died. Friends of Anne testified too demonstrating the loss people felt with Anne’s death.

After the prosecution finished the defense started presenting mitigating circumstances to sway the jury from the death penalty, calling Vance's aunt and a DHS records keeper. They shared details of Vance's past, a history of abuse, and reports his mother used drugs.

Court wrapped up for the day around 6:00 but the defense has more witnesses to call starting Thursday morning. They're trying get the jury to take Vance’s turbulent past into consideration when deciding his fate.

Closing arguments

Jurors listened to testimony from four witnesses from the prosecution and two from the defense. The defesense will have more witnesses Thursday morning starting at 9:30.

Vance was also convicted of rape and burglary charges.

29-year-old Vance was on trial for killing KATV anchor Anne Pressly last October.

During the prosecution’s closing arguments they called Curtis Vance "the predator out there preying on us" during its 56-minute closing argument Wednesday morning in the Anne Pressly murder trial.

Pulaski County deputy prosecutor John Johnson asked jurors to find Vance guilty of capital murder because he's accused of killing Pressly while committing a burglary at her home.

During the closing argument, Johnson repeatedly emphasized that DNA evidence and Vance's own words point to him as the killer.

"Remember that Curtis tells you 'I committed a sick crime,'" Johnson told jurors. "It was so bad that even he couldn't bring himself to tell every detail."

Pressly was attacked at her home Oct. 20, 2008, and died five days later.

This murderer is only trying to save his behind from the death sentence by pleading he has a mental issue. PLEASE ! We all know that is B.S. The only issues he has is he is a demented murderer and a stupid one at that. Bad wiring ? Paranoia ? Nobody is going to believe he has mental issues. If they do, they need to be locked up too. What a crock !

For the dense who say the evidence was planted: there was also semen that was found at the crime scene, not just a 'hair' -a pubic hair, perhaps? Semen was also found at the crime scene(s) in Marianna. Vance voluntarily submitted a DNA sample after it was requested by the Marianna police - this is how he was arrested so quickly. The DNA submitted also matched DNA found at two crime scenes. DNA is so individualized that it is literally billions to one odds against a false match. I don't see the LRPD being so eager for a conviction as to 'plant' evidence of this nature!

There is no question in my mind that this man is guilty. I think he acted alone. I am usually conflicted about the death penalty but not so in this case. The evidence is clear and convincing. There could not be any other possible reason his DNA should show up in Ms. Pressley's house. I fathom no redemption for Mr. Vance nor do I see where he would possibly contribute to mankind in any way should he get life except to continue to suck society dry for his very sustenance. The jury has gotten it correct so far. I think they'll get it right on this last leg of it.

There are lots of cases black and white that are not in the media the way this one was. But I don't think it has anything to do with race, this story was more public because she led a public life. Now for Vance, give him the death penalty. The time he has to spend in prison before it is actually carried out will sufice as punishment on earth. It won't happen tomorrow or next week. Knowing your expiration date will be better punishment. Don't let him ever have the chance for some idiot to let him out of prison, and the only way to be 100% sure of that is his death. He did it, there is evidence, he deserves the death penalty.

There was another woman brutally killed by her EX boyfriend in front of her three children at the same time as AP. She didn’t get the chance to have her story told. NO one asked about how many lives she touched or followed up on how it affected her three children who were in the home when she was killed!!! I thought the justice system was color blind…..I guess I was wrong. I do agree know one deserves to be murdered period but it leaves a real bad taste in your mouth and a sad/angry feeling in your heart when such favoritism is played out in the media making it appear one life was more valuable than the other?? Rest in LOVE Sonya Ratliff….

I get both view points. I don't want him living and breathing on my tax-paying dollar either. But if he gets death, then he gets off easy. Even though when he gets to hell, he will pay severely. But then again, I think he deserves to suffer on earth first. No mercy.

No he should not get life in prison for two reasons. First, tax payers dollars will go towards supporting him til the day he dies. We will pay for him to live and have three meals a day. Second, is Miss Presely alive? Why should he be shown mercey and his life spared when he himself did not do the same? An eye for an eye!!!!

Did you 2 also know they had his DNA on her and he was in possession of stolen property from HER house ? Get your facts before you make a judgement. We wanted to catch the right person. And they did. And now this punk will have to pay !
