LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Rain kept crowds away from the Arkansas State Fair on opening day but organizers say a single-day record of 88,769 people went through the gates the following day.

Saturday's attendance beat the previous single-day record of 87,890, which was set last year at the grounds in Little Rock.

Fair General Manager Ralph Shoptaw says clear weather and high demand set the right conditions for a record.

The record for total attendance at the Arkansas State Fair was set in 2010 when 472,196 people attended over the 10-day run of the fair.

The fair runs through Oct. 21.

These numbers are about as accurate as the unemployment numbers.
