Burglars are going door to door looking to break into your home. Police say this happens a lot. Now, the latest victims are speaking out and fighting back.
Robin Nelson says in the past two weeks four homes have been broken into in her neighborhood, including her own on Ponderosa Drive. She says it all starts with a knock at the door.
"They were asking if they could do lawn service or any other service they could do to make money. My son answered the door the first time, he told them, 'how are you going to cut someone's yard and you don't even have a lawn mower,'" says Nelson.
Later that same day, Nelson's next door neighbor's house was broken into.
"Whoever it was is somebody who watches this neighborhood to know he's at work and that I was gone," says Angela Eaton.
The crooks kicked in Easton's back door and got away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise including a flat screen TV and computer. "I've been scared every night to stay in my house by myself. It's kind of hard for me to sleep in here at night knowing that somebody out there knows exactly what my house looks like," explains Eaton.
Just three days later, the same thing happened to Nelson. Thieves kicked in her back door and took electronics and jewelry. "Just to come home and see your house ransacked, and that you worked so hard for those things and just for someone to go in and take them. You'll never understand how we felt that day," she explains.
Police say, unfortunatley, this often happens. "If you don't answer the door, a lot of times, they will break in. We know most of our residential burglaries occur during the day time when you are away," says Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department.
Nelson says she's seen the two young men and a woman in a grey car at least three times. Now, both women are fighting back by also going door to door and making people aware. They hope to start a neighborhood watch group to get everyone involved.
To try and avoing being a victim, police recommend:
- Play music or the TV on if you're not home.
- Advertise an alarm system or that you have a dog.
- If you see any suspicious activity call the police.
