Burglars are going door to door looking to break into your home. Police say this happens a lot. Now, the latest victims are speaking out and fighting back.

Robin Nelson says in the past two weeks four homes have been broken into in her neighborhood, including her own on Ponderosa Drive. She says it all starts with a knock at the door.

"They were asking if they could do lawn service or any other service they could do to make money. My son answered the door the first time, he told them, 'how are you going to cut someone's yard and you don't even have a lawn mower,'" says Nelson.

Later that same day, Nelson's next door neighbor's house was broken into.

"Whoever it was is somebody who watches this neighborhood to know he's at work and that I was gone," says Angela Eaton.

The crooks kicked in Easton's back door and got away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise including a flat screen TV and computer.  "I've been scared every night to stay in my house by myself. It's kind of hard for me to sleep in here at night knowing that somebody out there knows exactly what my house looks like," explains Eaton.

Just three days later, the same thing happened to Nelson. Thieves kicked in her back door and took electronics and jewelry.  "Just to come home and see your house ransacked, and that you worked so hard for those things and just for someone to go in and take them.  You'll never understand how we felt that day," she explains.

Police say, unfortunatley, this often happens.  "If you don't answer the door, a lot of times, they will break in.  We know most of our residential burglaries occur during the day time when you are away," says Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department.

Nelson says she's seen the two young men and a woman in a grey car at least three times.  Now, both women are fighting back by also going door to door and making people aware. They hope to start a neighborhood watch group to get everyone involved.

To try and avoing being a victim, police recommend:
  • Play music or the TV on if you're not home.
  • Advertise an alarm system or that you have a dog.
  • If you see any suspicious activity call the police.

I used to live in southwest Little Rock, and was broken into last year. Officer actually said "This is because you are white in a black neighborhood" and that "it was probably just kids." Didn't take prints or anything. He didn't even look into the neighbors we had when I told them about the unregistered firearms/prostitution/drugs that had been found there upon one of many calls. Talk about not doing your job... I told them the repercussions of breaking in again, and oddly enough it never happened again. Open carry would be nice, but it would be easier to have those responsible do their jobs.

It's amazing how we pay taxes so that someone can PROTECT & serve us. But when you are the victim of a break in like myself there just isn't any justice. The 1st of June my home was broken into in the SWLR area along with MANY homes in my area. The police dusted for finger prints went door to door and then I have never heard from them since then. No one will return my calls and I can't get any info about the evidence they took from my home. A family member that lives down the street from me had the same thing happen and her neighbor caught the (6)TEENAGE boys, 4 walking and 2 driving a black car coming out of her house. One cut himself and left a trail of blood in her residence and the shoes he dropped and yet no one has been , caught, arrested or even looked for. But if I was to go and shoot the first thing that tapped on my door they could find me in less than 10 minutes. Upset Victim of Circumstance

I have security at my house...3 large dogs, 2 security motion sensored lights at the entries, all exterior doors with extra long deadbolt locks, and the most deadlest type of gun, .22 . I told my neighbors when I moved in because I knew of some robberies in the area, and I told them that if anyone was stupid enough to break in on me...they'd be going out in a body bag, and that if they knew the suspects, that they should consider themselves warned. And I've never had any trouble in the 5yrs. I've been here:) I would NEVER rely or wait on a deputy to arrive to handle the situation, since they're 9 miles away. Besides, I have my mother to protect, so that makes me alittle more agressive anyway. My Dad and I went target practicing every Sunday after church and you can bet, I still do.

And yet another example of why people should be allowed open carry in Arkansas. Go to your door with a nice reliable gun on your hip in a holster.....and the coward thugs will run. If they break in or push their way in......drop em like a bad habit.
