Breezy and Stormy for Veterans Day

A cold front will usher in gusty winds and wet weather on this Veterans Day. Some thunderstorms may be strong later today.
Get ready for a breezy and wet afternoon as a low pressure system moves through the region. South winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph will be common with this system. A lake wind advisory is in effect through 9 pm this evening.

In addition to the gusty winds, a cold front will continue to move through the state this evening.  This frontal boundary will fire up a broad line of showers and thunderstorms.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, there is a slight risk of severe storms, with damaging winds the primary concern.  Recently a Tornado Watch was issued for Southwest Arkansas until 7 p.m. this evening.  Although the conditions are not highly favorable for tornadoes there could be one or two weak ones that touch down in this region.  For Central Arkansas, the most intense rain and winds will arrive around the sunset hour.

Due to the large amounts of moisture associated with the system rainfall amounts will average one to two inches across the area with some locally higher amounts. Since the ground is relatively wet across the state, flooding issues are not expected. However, with leaves falling from the trees there may be localized flooding in urban areas due to back up of storm drains.

Temperature wise, we'll be in the 60's and 70's before the cool air settles in tonight.  By the time many of us are getting ready for bed temperatures will be well down to the low 50's.

High pressure will follow the front Monday, bringing much cooler temperatures with highs in the 50's. Freezing temperatures are possible across Central Arkansas for the first time this fall.
