LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A food store is planned for a vacant property at Arch and Roosevelt Streets in Little Rock.

In addition to milk and cookies, managers would also sell beer and wine.

Kathy Wells went to Thursday nights planning commission meeting to protest the store's application.

"We don't think that store needs to have a beer permit to be a nice addition to the neighborhood," said Wells.

The planning department recommended denying the application, saying there are already four liquor stores within 1500 feet.

"The bottom line is we have got too many alcohol outlets in our part of town now. We've got too many families suffering the ill-effects of alcohol," said Wells.

Commissioners went back and forth over the issue before making a final decision. Despite the city's recommendation, the planning commission decided to approve the measure

However, opponents do have the opportunity to appeal. The attorney representing the property owner says it is important for managers to sell beer.

"It's certainly not going to be the main revenue producer. But it is a key factor in deciding whether or not a store owner can go in there and feasibly operate," said Geoff Treece.

As for the claim selling liquor here would have a negative impact on the community, Treece says that's something his client would not have any control over.

My thoughts exactly...liqour store on every damn corner. Most of them are owned by Arabians that dont give a care if the community is drinking theirselves to death or not. They shut down at night and go to their luxury homes, while their customers drink a 5th of vodka and kill someone. The Black community needs to wake up and take care of their own because the city of Little Rock dont give a damn.

This old woman thinks that by not allowing another store that sells beer and wine is going to help deter crime? She needs to get a better grip on reality. What does she want, a GNC so she can get her geritol and metamucil?

I do not want beer sold in the store or any alcohol. It is ridiculous for a lush guzzling society to have any more. Go away property owner and peddle your bad drug alcohol away from us. Sick of drunks.
