LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Teaching the next generation is what Sunday's National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives youth conference focused on.

"We are really committed to building leaders and making sure young people get a foundation," said chairperson Rhonda Glover.

The event is part of the organization's four day conference held at the Statehouse Convention Center. Saturday, local kids saw a dramatization of the first black deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves.

Justin Clark says he is learning how to perform at his best in school and the community.

"It is important because I want to be a leader and hopefully the program helps me and my future so I can help other people," said Clark.

I stand for God and Country. And I stand for those that have served our country. I belong to a national organization that attends the funerals of our veterans, retired military, and KIA's at the family's request. And it makes no difference to any of us if they were white, black, or green; we honor those that have worn the uniform of our Armed Forces, and consider all that served Honorably as hero's. I personally believe your grandfather is a hero, for serving in Korea during time of war. It is indeed an injustice that he was unable to attend the college of his choice upon return. But that was then, things have changed since then. This is the 21st Century; and there is no need for groups that are race based, with the exception of those that are hate based; the KKK and the Black Panthers to name 2. I am not perfect; there was only one man that was. I try my hardest to be a good Christian; but it is difficult task; after all, I'm not perfect. And that is what is in my heart.

Epiphany, you missed my entire point. My point is that the black community is still under the impression that the world owes them something. Yet they find ways to isolate themselves from other races. When is the last time you heard of a race discrimination lawsuit from a race OTHER than the black race? If a black man kills a white man, are there groups out there like the NAACP that go out and get on their soapboxes and preach racism? The black race is the race hung up on racism and is the race thats keeping it alive. Equality has gone out the window.

@ArkansasYankee...I am not quite sure as to what your point was about the pageants, black friends, and what have you. The first black women to appear on the stage for the Miss America Pageant was in 1923 as "slaves" for a musical number. It wasn't until the 1970's before a black woman was admitted to compete. Does this mean the pageant is a racist organization? I do know that it means blacks had to create a separate pageant if they wanted such. Also, I am not a racists...my favorite actor is white, Sean Penn. I would have voted for Jimmy Carter if I hadn't been born in 1979 and guess what, a white lady that I know makes the best lemon pie I have ever tasted! You get my point I suppose...lol! I don't need to know who your black friends are, who your white friends are, who your asian friends, are any other race/ethnic group. What matters is what is in your heart...what do you stand for as a humanbeing? Lastly, we aren't in the 1960's but sadly all of the hatemongers from that era have not died and have passed their hatred on to their children who in turn have passed it down to their grandchildren. So again, we can change the laws all we want but we can't change the heart of a man...that starts at home.

@itsjustme...I'm not sure of your age or your background. I am 33 yrs. old, college educated, no children, nor have I ever been married. I come from a family where some members of it have passed for white so that they could attend the universities they desired, interview and be hired for jobs they were overqualified for, and served a country in the Korean War that treated many of them like crap upon their return to this country. I share this with you because my grandparents, great-aunts and uncles are the individuals who endured this misery and are alive and well today! They(black folks) have never complained about "the man" nor have they asked for any handouts. We are a family of nurses, doctors, lawyers, educators, executives and I know this is possible only because of their courage. Now allow me to pose this question to you...were you in such an uproar when The Miss America Pageant didn't allow people of color to compete? Were you so upset that black physicians weren't allowed to treat white patients? Do you find it unfair that my grandfather served this country and received a Purple Heart but couldn't attend his University of choice because of his race? EXACTLY!!! You don't care about injustice. You just want something to complain about. The bottom line is these organizations were created because of Jim Crow laws...read some history please! Lastly, please stop making broadbased assumptions about people. I don't think every white Arkansan is illiterate, lives in a trailer, and smokes meth. That would be wrong although many do have that impression of some Arkansans and I quickly correct them.

@ArkYank...You are right, this is not the 60's, but unfortunately hatred and racism is a learned behavior and still rampant today. I have personally seen where parents are teaching their 5 yr old kids to hate other races. Sadly, this will continue to be an enternal tug-of-war.

dhdbest; the weather stinks, and no offense to my many friends and family that are Cowboy fans, but so do they. I'd rather talk about the Yankees and Raiders. And I do feel for the black community; if they think their voices were drowned out in the past; wait a few decades, and the Hispanics will be drowning out their voices. I'm not sure; but I think they have already passed blacks as the largest minority group in the US; if they haven't yet, it won't be long. And they don't like black people anymore than they do whites.

Epiphany23; itsjustme speaks the truth based on facts. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge; I personally think this is a racist organization; simply because it is for blacks only; I'm sure you have read my comments regarding me501's post. Is there not merit in these arguments? Do they not speak the truth? itsjustme made a good point, and a factual one, in his comments regarding the different Miss America pagaents. Now which one of these two pagaents are "racist"? One allows people of all races, and one does not. And I am not a racist. I have several black friends; I would have voted for Gen. Powell had he run for president; some of my favorite actors are blacks; my favorite baseball player is half and half; some of my all time favorite Raiders were black; as a child, I saw ( in person ) Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins, and Ernie Banks play, and admired all of them; Bill Cosby gave me more laughs than anyone other than Bob Hope when I was younger; I could go on all day, but judging by your writing, I'm guessing you are well educated, so I'm sure you see my point. And we are not in the '60's any longer; so I do not see the "need" for these black only groups. Brown vs. the Board; didn't that take care of desegregation? Then why do we have a decades long "desegregation" case going on here in Central AR? We bus kids for hours so that schools and school children will have the same opportunities; yet this case just seems to drag on and on and on. We've dumbed down tests so that children of all races can pass; and look where it has taken us! 25th in the world in education. Look at Central High. A nice, middle class white area in 1957. Then white flight, and the new home owners turned the area into a ghetto, where white people are not welcome at all; and you call us racist? I stand by all my comments and posts on this subject; and they are based on facts, not racism as you suggest.

To all commenters! This topic is null and void because there will never be a compromise. In order for this to happen, each side has to be open minded and willing to make a change!! Unfortunately, I don't think this will happen in this lifetime. So you might as well talk about the weather or how about those Cowboys???

Epiphany, no one here has called the group itself racists. What is being said, with valid argument, is how there are black groups for this and that and the black community wanting total desegregation, yet the black community is always finding ways and groups to isolate themselves from everyone else. It is also an argument that the black community is always ranting and raving about "the white man keeping them down." When in fact, it is the black race itself keeping itself down. The other point being argued is when blacks form a group, it is socially acceptable, but when a white group forms, they are the racist group. If they want a Black Miss America, then blacks should not be allowed to compete in the regular competition, but that would spark a racial discrimination lawsuit. Can a white woman, or a woman of any other race, compete in the "Black Miss America" pagaent? Hell no. That in itself is racisim, but since the black community is promoting it, we as a society have to accept it. Stop blaming other races for keeping the black race down, start blaming the real cause, racist black people.
