LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A state senator hopes to extend the number of days some Arkansas students attend school from 178 days to 200 days.
Senator David Johnson (D- District 32) said the extension could help the state improve the its education rankings.
"It would mean by the time they reached the eighth grade they would have an additional full year of school under their belt," said Johnson.
The bill awaits results on an financial study by the state finance department. Johnson would like the school year extension to start in the districts that are under the school improvement category. These are districts that have failed to meet federal No Child Left Behind guidelines.
"Instead of staying home playing video games, kids are going to be in school learning," said Johnson.
Johnson said the plan would make Arkansas students more competitive.
"In the global economy we have to offer high-level training, high-level preparation and additional school training for our children in Arkansas," said Johnson.
