3-Month-Old's Death Tough to Take for Sheriff

LONOKE COUNTY, AR - After months of investigating, Tuesday the Lonoke County Sheriff's Department arrested Lindsey Colbert, 28, and charged her with manslaughter in the death of her 3-month-old baby boy.

Sheriff John Staley said, "It's just hard, it's hard for everybody."

According to a news release, deputies found the baby dead on March 13th.  The investigation determined the cause of death to be severe malnourishment.

Staley added, "It could have been feed, but maybe it was allergic to the food, it could have been a lot of things."

Colbert was arrested Tuesday.

"The law is the law, and if you do this to a child we are going to hold you accountable, kids are number one."

The suspected crime happened in a small, rural community in Ward, and word quickly spread among neighbors.

Jeff Dedmon said, "When it comes to a baby, I mean they're the future, that's what we love, and that's what we should take care of."

"I just think that that is so sad that a mother can have a child and then not take care of the child."

"Everything seemed to be normal, I would have no suspicion that something like that would be going on."

"I won't ever forget that story.  That's sad."

Sheriff Staley agreed, this tragedy is tough to take.

"It will be there forever, it will be one of those that you dream about sometimes, and you wake up in the middle of the night and you go check on your kids just because."

Colbert is being held in the Lonoke County Detention Center without bond until her first court date.
