LITTLE ROCK, AR - Representative Jeremy Gillam, R-Judsonia, was elected House speaker-designate Wednesday for the 2015 session.

Gillam received 57 of 98 votes on the first ballot, ahead of representative Matthew Sheppard, R-El Dorado, Fred Love, D-Little Rock, and Kim Hammer, R-Benton.

Republicans hold a 51-48-1 advantage in the House, however the general election in November could change the balance of power, resulting in another election for speaker later this year.

Gillam says he plans to work as someone who can build consensus.

"I think it's going to continue on with the great tradition we've had for decades," Gillam says.  "I think speaker (Davy) Carter has left some pretty big shoes to fill, so I'm going to be in lots of conversations with him."
