Police Say Woman's Death is a Murder, Charge Son in NWA

SPRINGDALE, AR-- Police have charged a northwest Arkansas man with the shooting death of his mother.

Officers say they found 65-year-old Frances Rocha's body early Friday morning in a home in the 3500 block of Loblolly Place in Springdale.

Officers were responding to a 911 call from the friend of Rocha's son, Scott.

Scott Rocha had apparently told his friend he was going to commit suicide.

"Some police officers showed up to do a welfare check," says Springdale Police Chief Derek Hudson.

"When they looked in, they noticed a large amount of blood inside the home. Mr. Rocha came out of a back bedroom and made contact with the officers.

Mr. Rocha said that the blood was from his mother, that he had shot his mother, but that it was accidental."

Now, officers say they do not believe it was an accident.

After investigating, they charged Scott Rocha with Capital Murder and tampering with evidence.

Police tell us they'll continue processing the scene by gathering evidence and talking to neighbors to figure out what led to the shooting.
