FORT SMITH, AR -- A man crashed his experimental plane into the Arkansas River near Fort Smith last night.

The pilot was rescued by a nearby boat.

He was the only person on the plane.

The Fort Smith Police Department said they received a call shortly after 7:00 p.m. about a reported plane crash.

As best could be determined the pilot, Tim Hazelwood, was attempting to do a “touch and go” on the river, according to police.

Fort Smith police believe the plane was designed to be able to land on the water, but the landing gear was not retracted.

The investigation is continuing.
