The bill being considered would provide what the group describes as a relatively small amount of additional funding for the plan facing tens of millions of dollars in financial funding shortfalls.
Part-time employees, like many bus drivers, would likely no longer be covered and the bill would also restrict spouse coverage options.
"If you just look at the numbers on paper, it might make a little bit of sense. But if you look at it from a human perspective, which we are, it makes no sense," said Shelley Smith, a public school teacher.
The group is encouraging legislators to find a long-term funding solution. These public school employees are also concerned that while premiums may decrease for some, out-of-pocket costs and deductibles will be beyond what some employees can pay.
