NLR Makes Top 10 Most Dangerous Small Cities List

- NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - A new study says North Little Rock is number 5 on a list of America's 10 Most Dangerous Small Cities.

City officials and a longtime business owner disagree.

Melody Stanley has framed artwork in North Little Rock for 31 years at the Red Door Gallery. She says the biggest setback that she can remember, "The economy was the biggest thing for us, and we had a lull last year."

As far as crime, "The worst thing that we've ever experienced is graffiti on our wall," Stanley says.

So she can't quite understand how a blogger, who writes for a popular real estate site, placed North Little Rock in his top ten list of most dangerous small cities.

"I'm appalled by that, okay, it doesn't happen," she says.

The writer says the report was produced by looking at 234 small cities, measuring burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, robbery and assault. The results put North Little Rock right in the center of places not to live if you want a safe environment.

Nathan Hamilton, the North Little Rock Director of Communications, says this information couldn't be further from the truth.

"It's a ridiculous study, we take the issue of crime very seriously in North Little Rock, the blogger who posted this apparently does not, he skewed FBI statistics," says Hamilton, adding that crime has gone down in the city.

"Violent crime in North Little Rock is down in 2013 by 14 percent, property crime is down by an amazing 26 percent, theft from vehicles is down an astounding 50 percent," he says.

Hamilton says the numbers clearly show North Little Rock should not have made the list.

"Not a study worth taking seriously,"  he says.

Meanwhile, Melody Stanley says North Little Rock is a great place to be and she's not planning on going anywhere.

FOX16 spoke to the report writer and he's standing by his list.
