Russellville, Arkansas -
RUSSELLVILLE, AR - The Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors has decided to take more time to consider a permit for a crematorium in Russellville's Center Valley area.
The panel discussed the issue during a meeting in Little Rock on Thursday.
The biggest concern for the community is the plan to built the facility right next to an elementary school.
"We're doing something that's very new. It's not new in a crematory, but it is new to put that crematory in with the idea that we feel comfortable with it being next to a school or any neighborhood," says Jim Bob Humphrey, owner of Humphrey Funeral Service, which will operate the crematorium.
Some citizens are worried about the release of mercury in the air and the potential danger that it poses to children nearby.
In delaying its decision on the permit application, the Embalmers Board said it needed more time to research the concerns.
