FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — Fort Smith community-based organization will brief state and congressional leaders later this month about its efforts to defend the Arkansas Air National Guard's 188th Fighter Wing against possible budget cuts.

Officials have expressed concern about funding reductions to the National Guard and active Air Force units that fly the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, including the 18tth, after a congressional supercommittee failed to agree on spending cuts in the federal budget.

According to the Northwest Arkansas Times, Maj. Gen. William Morrow said Friday the 188th Fighter Wing/ Fort Chaffee Community Council has been working on a plan that will be presented to Gov. Mike Beebe and Congress members Dec. 20.

Morrow said if no decision is reached on spending, the Defense Department could take a $500 billion hit.
