LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Senate is meeting to elect a new president and committee chairmen two days after an election in which Republicans won control of the upper chamber for the first time since Reconstruction.
The Senate planned to meet Thursday for new member orientation and to prepare for the legislative session that begins in January. The organizational meeting comes two days after Republicans won 21 of the chamber's 35 seats.
Republican Sen. Michael Lamoureux of Russellville has said he planned to seek the Senate presidency if his party won in Tuesday's election.
Senators also planned to make committee assignments and draw for seniority. They also will draw to decide which members serve two-year terms and which will serve four-year terms after redistricting.
