LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Supreme Court is wishing two retiring justices well.
Associate Justices Robert Brown and Jim Gunter are retiring at the end of the year. Gov. Mike Beebe will appoint someone to finish out Brown's term. Court of Appeals Judge Jo Hart was elected to Gunter's seat. She starts in January.
Their fellow justices thanked the two Thursday for their service to the citizens and judiciary.
Gunter practiced law in Hope and served as a prosecutor and judge before he was elected to the high court in 2004.
Brown has served on the court for more than two decades. In that time, he has written more than 1,200 majority opinions, including rulings on the landmark Lake View case regarding the adequacy and equity of state funding for public schools.
