LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - State highway officials say they're planning to replace the oldest of five bridges carrying motor vehicles across the Arkansas River at Little Rock, the 88-year-old Broadway Bridge.

The bridge is one of two non-interstate spans that provide cars and trucks with a way to travel between downtown Little Rock and downtown North Little Rock.

Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Randy Ort said the state Highway Commission has set aside $45 million to begin work on improvements to the Broadway Bridge. He said work on the project could begin as early as 2013.

Department spokesman Glenn Bolick says no estimate of the full cost of the project will be available until design work is complete.
