LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas voters have approved a half-cent sales tax increase to fund $1.8 billion in highway improvements over the next 10 years.

Tuesday's vote will increase Arkansas' state sales tax to 6.5 percent from 6 percent, beginning July 1. The tax will remain in place up to 10 years - or until the bonds issued to pay for the projects are repaid.

The measure had no organized opposition, and backers say the tax will fund much-needed improvements throughout the state.

Projects funded by the tax include widening Interstate 540 to six lanes between Fayetteville and Bentonville, while doing the same on Interstate 40 between Conway and Little Rock.

The plan also calls for additional four-lane work in northeast Arkansas to connect Jonesboro and Paragould to U.S. 67/167 and Interstate 55.

Don't we have enough taxes? I don't even think people read the issues on the ballet. All they see is New and Better Stuff! and check yes. I am so tired of paying for crap I don't need, don't use, don't want, don't support, and what other people have who shouldn't.

I don't believe the ones that voted for more taxes are the ones that are paying the taxes.

I can't believe it. We aren't taxed enough already? How many fools that voted for this believe the money is all going for road improvements; and not into the pockets of pols and their cronies in the "highway business"? Change the laws so that AR based trucking businesses tag their tractors and trailers in AR, and not in OK; that would be a start towards money to fix the roads they tear up.

I wonder just how many people voted against President Obama because they didn't want higher taxes and turned around and voted to raise their own taxes. Really Arkansas?
