LOCKESBURG, Ark. (AP) — An audit of a volunteer fire department in southwest Arkansas has found nearly $12,000 that the audit says was apparently stolen or fraudulently spent.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that the audit of the Provo Volunteer Fire Department said checks were cashed, money was withdrawn or cash withheld from bank deposits. The audit said there were two dozen such instances between December 2008 and February 2011.

The audit says the transactions "appear to not be proper expenditures for the fire department" and indicate "theft or fraudulent expenditures."

Fire Chief Paul Davignon Jr. did not respond to requests for comment.

Provo is an unincorporated community northeast of Lockesburg in Sevier County.
