BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Bentonville officials are taking a look at a longtime summer pastime: jumping from rope swings or bridges into creeks and lakes.

The Bentonville City Council is considering an amendment Tuesday night that would ban jumping from the swings that are attached to city bridges.

The Benton County Daily Record reports that the Bentonville Police Department warns would-be jumpers against leaping from a pedestrian bridge at Lake Bella Vista, but officers have no way to stop people from jumping.

The city says jumping is dangerous at Lake Bella Vista because the water level varies based on rainfall and the lake is often only 5 feet deep. Parks director David Wright says the city has repeatedly removed a rope swing attached to the pedestrian bridge but it always "pops back up."
