TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) — A former Murfreesboro police officer has been found mentally competent to stand trial for murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Forty-two-year-old Daniel Gardner is charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 10 shooting death of 34-year-old Marie Cogburn. Cogburn was found dead in Gardner's home in Nashville with a gunshot wound to the back.

Authorities say Gardner said he didn't mean to shoot Cogburn but said he "pulled the trigger."

Gardner is being held in the Howard County jail on $200,000 bail.

Prosecutor Bryan Chesshir says Gardner was a Murfreesboro police officer in the 1990s.
