FOUKE, Ark. (AP) — Fouke has renamed a city park in honor of a 20-year-old woman whose death remains unresolved after she was killed in 1988.

Family and friends gathered Sunday at Monica Sanders Memorial Park — which was formerly known as Fouke City Park.

The Texarkana Gazette reports the Fouke City Council voted unanimously in August to rename the park in honor of Sanders.

She was a graduate of Fouke High School and a fifth-year ballet student when she was killed. Sanders' body was found on Aug. 30, 1988, in Mercer Bayou. Police say she was raped, had two teeth knocked out and was shot three times in the chest.

Police arrested a man who was seen leaving a Texarkana nightclub with Sanders, but a jury acquitted him in her death.
