HOPE, Ark. (AP) - The weather warning system in Hempstead County has taken a beating from three lightning strikes.

County Judge Wallace Martin says the lightning knocked out three different sirens during a severe thunderstorm. Martin also says the county needs more repeater towers to send electronic signals to activate the remaining sirens.

Martin says there are dead areas and the county has tried moving repeaters but it needs more.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that Martin says residents should invest in weather warning radios to ensure they receive bulletins during severe weather.

Martin says not enough people in the county have land lines to justify putting in a telephone-based warning system, similar to one in Texarkana.
