JOHNSON, Ark. (AP) — A new Civil War historical marker in northwest Arkansas commemorates the burning of Sutton Mill.
The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission hopes to place a marker in each of Arkansas' 75 counties by 2015. On Monday, members of the commission and other Civil War buffs gathered in Johnson to unveil the marker.
The Northwest Arkansas Times reports that 40 Civil War markers have been dedicated in 30 counties so far.
Sutton Mill is now known as Johnson Mill. It was burned in the war — and historians disagree on whether Union or Confederate soldiers set it ablaze.
The marker says Confederate soldiers burned mills to keep Union soldiers from using them, while Union soldiers set them on fire so they couldn't be used as gathering places for Confederate soldiers.
