FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service and local law enforcement agencies are validating the addresses of registered sex offenders in western Arkansas.

The Marshals Service says Operation Safe Gateway targeted 267 registered sex offenders in the Fort Smith and Sebastian County area on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Officers located and verified 233 of those on the list, but were unable to make contact with 34 others. Officials say the offenders either were not home at the time or weren't living at the residence where they were registered.

The Marshals Service says officers will follow up with those they weren't able to contact and may seek charges for those who weren't in compliance with the sex offender registry.

No names were released.
