FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Washington County says more than $100,000 has been refunded to county taxpayers who were overcharged for their property taxes.

Washington County collector David Ruff says he mailed 231 refunds — averaging $533 apiece — to elderly and disabled property owners. The county says the property owners were overcharged because of a misinterpretation of state law.

The Northwest Arkansas Times reports that a constitutional amendment calls for property values to be frozen for homeowners who are disabled or who are 65 or older who purchased real estate after 2005. But Assessor Jeff Williams says the county had been relying on an earlier law — that has since been invalidated — and that led to the incorrect tax bills.
