LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A Republican Party spokeswoman says state Senate hopeful Tommy Caubble has died. He was 65.

Arkansas GOP spokeswoman Katherine Vasilos said Caubble died earlier Thursday morning. She did not say how he died, but said his family was expected to release a statement later Thursday afternoon.

Caubble was the the co-owner of Caubble Peach Orchards and serves as president of Phoenix Grainery, both in Wynne.

Caubble won the GOP nomination for state Senate District 23 without any opposition in the May primary. He was challenging Democratic Rep. Jerry Brown, who also won his party's nomination without opposition.

Vasilos said the party has five days to tell Gov. Mike Beebe whether it wants to fill the vacant nomination through a special election or convention.
