Weighing '14 bid, Hutchinson takes on NRA role

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Former Congressman Asa Hutchinson is heading up a National Rifle Association effort to push for armed officers in the nation's schools, a move that could bolster the Arkansas Republican's conservative credentials as he prepares for a potential 2014 bid for governor.

The NRA on Friday announced that Hutchinson would lead a program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers. Hutchinson told The Associated Press the effort wasn't aimed at requiring armed guards at all schools.

Hutchinson is expected to announce in January whether he'll seek the state's top office. He said Friday that the NRA initiative won't delay or affect his decision on the race.

Hutchinson was backed by the NRA in his unsuccessful run for governor in 2006.
