LITTLE ROCK, AR - Ten students and two teachers chaperoning the Parkview Arts/Magnet High School debate team remain in Brooklyn at the New York Brooklyn Bridge Marriot Hotel after Hurricane Sandy cancelled 10,000 flights and shut down the city's train and subway systems.

The students, along with two teachers, were in New York for a mock trial competition when the storm struck.

Debate sponsor Patricia Treadway said the students are "fine," and are treating the situation like an "extended vacation," according to the school district.

The students who are in New York are seniors Sylvia Raven Cole, Charles Cohen, Tanner Clements, Wilson Jones; juniors Colin Boyd, Ramzee Williams, Claire Frueauff, Deborah Rookey, and Lelia Kerr and sophomore Jordan Borst.

A release from the school district says Parkview administrators in Little Rock have been in constant contact with the students' parents. Teachers at school were also notified and will be giving the students time to make up lost school work.

Dr. Dexter Booth, principal at Parkview, said the school will cover the student's expenses for their extended stay.

I agree, jw! Also, why in the heck did they take that trip? It was known for weeks ahead that this storm was coming. And that it was going to be a bad one. It was utterly careless and negligent that the administrators, teachers and parents allowed this trip to take place.

was it really necessary to name the students?
