JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — About 300 people attended a candlelight vigil for a Mississippi man who police say fatally shot himself in the back of a Jonesboro police car.

Police say 21-year-old Chavis Carter apparently shot himself while handcuffed on July 28. He was a passenger in a car that was pulled over and was later detained because of outstanding warrants.

The Rev. Adrian Rodgers of Fullness of Joy Church spoke at Monday night's vigil for Carter. He says those gathered shouldn't make accusations at police — but that everyone is confused about how Carter could have fired a gun while handcuffed.

Police tell The Jonesboro Sun that witnesses' statements and dash-cam video support the accounts from officers, who said Carter shot himself with a handgun in the back seat of the car.

If he had the guy, he may have been trying to shoot an officer. WHILE I DO SYMPATHIZE WITH HIS LOVED ONES....hopefully justice will be done....BUT with the 15 yr, old killed in Little Rock last week and any other CRIMINAL,....Dear Family: It was just a matter of time until these guys killed someone and went to prison for life...they may have been great fun loving relatives and friends, but they were CRIMINALS and a threat to EVERYONE ELSE IN SOCIETY with their irresponsible CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. Our police officers RISK their lives every time they check someone out....it is only FAIR THAT THE CRIMINAL IS RISKING THEIRS ALSO,

Some people can slide their hands under their butt when cuffed and get them in front of them. But if searched twice, BIG IF, then why wasn't the weapon found. Also they need to check the camera and check the blod spatter to see where it is and if he did actually shoot himself. Lots of unanswered questions here.

Sure would like to know the answers also. Didn't know the dashcam could see the back seat. Been in handcuffs a couple of times; if he did have a weapon near where his hands were, it wouldn't have been that difficult to get to, or use, regardless of the cuffs. But according to the orignal story, they searched him twice; poor police work? Or something else we are not hearing?

I would like to know where he had the gun hid at, why it wasnt found during the searches and how in the hell a person that is handcuffed with their hands behind their back can not only get to the gun, but fire off a fatal shot. There are a lot of unanswered questions. I am not blaming the police, just confused like everyone else.
