Monticello School leaders confirm they are investigating a fight at its junior high school football game this week against Hamburg Junior High School.

Superintendent Bob Harper says at least 60 people were on the field at the time of the fight, including players, coaches, and parents. Monticello's coach suffered a broken nose, says Harper.

Leaders say it is unclear what caused the fight, but Harper admits there were plenty of frustrations towards the end of the game.

"The Monticello School District regrets the altercation between the Monticello Junior High and Hamburg Junior High football teams last night at Hyatt Field in Monticello. The administrative staffs and coaches of both school districts are working together to decide what action or actions need to be taken to ensure that the incident is resolved and further incidents like this do not happen again," said Harper in a prepared statement.

Hamburg School Superintendent Max Dyson and athletic director Bob Davis did not return calls for comment Friday.

Fardy McPooter I agree with you completely. Football and Basketball have gotten more important than education to School Officials, Parents and students. The High School and Middle schools needs to be concentrating on Mathematics and Sciences. There are so many foreign nationals filling Medical, engineering, and other high tech jobs because there are not enough graduating from our Universities. I do not think High School football is worth that myself. Schools are for EDUCATION. It used to be Football taught good sportsmanship, but there are more of these fight every year.

VERY WELL SAID asp01.... I've watched the video at least a dozen times.. & those who are speaking without hard solid proof of what they are talking about are no better than those "mouthing off" during the game... get your facts straight... watch the film (if you even have access to it.. most probably will NOT.. so we are getting all types of rumors and lies started over inaccurate "eye-witness" reports, "hear-say", & some who probably didn't like the "hamburg coaches who just STOOD THERE" from the get-go).. before you go and tarnish someones professional career such as these Hamburg coaches.. maybe you should take a look at YOUR OWN character and the type of example you set for people... its unfortunate the game ended the way it did.. unsportsmanlike conduct on EACH SIDE... MONTICELLO & HAMBURG COACHES both yelling at their teams.. & probably pretty fired up and mad at the situation... I guess these "hamburg coaches" should have just benched their entire team the first time Monticello did something unsportsmanlike & they reacted... maybe then fans & both towns would have been happy.... wake up Monticello.. your kids aren't perfect & neither are your coaches.... & for those Hamburg fans with children on the team... move to Monticello.. join their FB team.. & then you can get a first hand experience with how wonderful and golden the "monticello coaches" are... wake up... both are at fault... children, coaches, PARENTS WHO ATTACKED A COACH WHO WAS DOING NOTHING BUT TRYING TO BREAK UP THE FIGHT.. yet...its ironic.. that we only hear about the Monticello coach that was injured.. who from the video clearly instigated a confrontation with the student.. should the hamburg student(s) have reacted the way they did... NO... but what about that parent from MOnticello who put a coach in a chokehold... I guess since he IS FROM MONTICELLO.. he slipped and on the way down & used the Hamburg coach to break his fall... reality check monticello.u don't live in a perfect world

I have seen the video numerous times and there were definitely not ANY coaches just "standing by" and not helping, as Traci posted. When all coaches realized what was going on, they immediately came and started pulling players back and off of the pile/fighting that had started. I know for a fact that 3 of the Hamburg coaches came to help with the Monticello coach who was on the ground, surrounded. The remaining Hamburg coach was on the other side of the field, trying to make sure the rest of the players were under control. The whole incident lasted no more than 30 seconds, if that. It was clear that both sides were involved in the fighting--I saw both Hamburg AND Monticello PLAYERS hitting opposite sides. That said, there was not any coach (Monicello or Hamburg) that hit anyone or stood back "by to watch." At the very beginning of it all, the coaches were telling their kids to go off the field and trying to hold them back. Once again, I've seen the video numerous times and can see that both teams were at fault and both teams had players involved in fighting. Once again, players, not coaches. Perhaps instead of immediately getting on forums to slander others, football "fans" should wait and give administrators more than 24 hours to look into the situation.

I am from Hamburg and do not understand why Monticello Schools are trying to work with Hamburg but for some reson Hamburg has nothing to say, will not return phone calls nor will they give any information to try to help figure out the situation. It is wrong on both sides however this is not the first time Hamburd has had anything like this and if a Hamburg coach can stand by and watch several players beating a coach on the ground and just watch should not ever be able to be the adult over any students. There are numerous videos and when you see them it will be very clear both sides were fighting but one side started the fight that was not Monticello. I am not blaming it on my hometown but I am saying even after both teams ran their months nonstop throughout the game & played very aggresive had Hambug not started this it would not have happened. Very ashamed of the whole incident. When tensions are already high and you have an adult figure as a coach that stands by to watch why would our kids do anything other than what they did. Wrong on all areas.

Well I know of a great way for these two schools to save money next football season.........disband the teams, increase their core curriculum in place of football practice. spend the saved money on text books. I have never seen a melee break out at a spelling bee or science fair. Never see marching bands throwing hand sandwiches in anybodies grill !
