LITTLE ROCK, AR-- This weekend, Arkansas Children's Hospital sponsored its Adult Burn Survivor Retreat at the Arkansas 4-H Center.
Michael Gartman is a burn survivor and double amputee, injured in a car accident eight years ago. He got third and fourth degree burns on 55 percent of his body.
At the time, he was rescued out of his car by two good samaritans.
"They said they tried to pull me out the first time by my arm. They said when they grabbed it, they pulled skin all the way off my arm. The second time, they said they pretty much grabbed me by my belt and yanked me out of there," said Gartman.
Gartman is in Little Rock for the retreat, participating in art classes and sharing his experience with other survivors.
"No two burns are exactly the same. But its just the fact that you have been through something similar," said Gartman.
Heike Roberson is a burn survivor..
"I was attacked with acid. It was attempted murder," said Roberson.
She is now a motivational speaker and gives messages of hope to recent victims.
"You have to really see who you are. You have to accept the new you. But before you do that, you have to let go of the past," said Roberson.
Survivors like Gartman agree.
"Your life does, it totally changes," said Gartman.
