LONOKE, AR -- This weekend, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission hosts the Youth Shooting Tournament at Remington Gun Club. But there is one participant who had to use his skills for protection earlier this week.

Competitor number 2945 on the Conway Trap Team knows how to shoot a target well. Monday night, Fox 16 told you about two intruders making their way inside his Conway home.

Instead of panicking, he went straight for his shotgun and chased the people out.

Since police have not made any arrests, his mom asked we conceal his identity.

"I started shooting with my dad around 5 or 6," said "Brady".

His mom says teaching Brady how to "think safety" is a priority.

"If there is a gun in the house, you have to have gun safety laws in your home. If you teach a child young, then you don't have to worry," said Angela Smithpeters.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says if your child has not been properly trained, he or she should stay away from any guns.

But coaches say what happened to Brady on Sunday shows there are benefits of proper training.

Chuck Woodson says the Commission teaches kids careful assembly and storage, which helps kids like Brady be prepared.

"He had practice that afternoon. He probably took care of his shotgun and cleaned his shotgun. He stored it back properly and had it there with him when that intruder came in," said Woodson.

I have always said. " It's not the weapon that's dangerous, it's who is behind it that's dangerous." Kudos to that young man and those who taught him right from wrong. You have done a great job of raising a fine young man.

I taught shotgun for a long time with 4-H before I came here. It was very rewarding. I may have gotten more out of it than the kids. But I loved it. If I was physically able, I would still be doing it. If you love guns, teach the children. They are the future of our sport!
