Dozens of students gathered outside Arkansas Baptist College today demanding their financial aid refund checks that never came.

"They still keep telling me to wait but - we've been waiting and we ain't got no money yet," said Freshman Sharvonia Nelson.

Nelson is waiting on about $1,000 to pay for groceries and rent.

"After paying for books and everything, that helps a lot but they're still not giving us our money," said Nelson.

Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Billy Owens says the college doesn't have the money to give students.

He blames a new software system for glitches in the financial aid application process delaying the school from getting the applications to the federal government.

Until the government has the completed applications, students will continue to wait on their refunds.

"We're actually giving our students an advance so that they will have money to take care of emergencies," said Owens.

Owens is now manually writing checks to hundreds of students giving them advances from the college's general fund to help them get through another week.

"It's less money than they were scheduled to receive but it's enough money to tide them over for the next weekend," said Owens.

"I just hope I get my money soon," said Nelson. "Otherwise I'm going to have to leave the school."

"Our students are number one," said Owens. "They've had enough traumatic things go on in their lives this week and we're not trying to add to it."

Owens believes all the major glitches in the new system are now fixed but knows this crowd will still have to wait for their money at least one more week.

Almost 90% of the student body at Arkansas Baptist relies on financial aid and the refunds that come with it to help them pay for school.

What I find funny is when they interview some of our college athletes after a game. You cant understand a word they are saying. It really isnt funny, its damn sad. Most athletes get a scholarship because of their athletic abilities and forget about getting a degree. My opinion, no one should go to the pro level without a degree. Pro sports is not a true guarantee of a lifestyle or means to support yourself. But, its the blind view of the almighty dollar that persuades kids differently.

Oh, and by the way justbecus - I bought diapers, formula, groceries, paid my mortgage, utilities, and ALL my bills on my OWN. Didn't have any help from anyone, didn't ASK for any help, and I SURELY did NOT expect a check other than my own hard earned paycheck to pay for me OR my families needs.

Justbecause - thus - just ONE of the downfalls of education in the USA. If we do not expect our children to learn anything in school but at LEAST to communicate properly so they can use those skills in the workplace, we are enablers. Me, now, I EXPECT and CORRECT the grammer of my children and EXPECT my son who is now attending college to communicate and present himself in a manner that when he is going to job interviews, the employeer hiring will want to hire him over someone who cannot represent their company professionally. In fact, all through elementary & highschool my children were correcting the TEACHERS on proper grammer - That is very, very sad. But, I am old school where the nuns whacked the hands of anyone getting out of line with rulers. You gotta bet we sat up straight and listened and learned !!!! Bottom line is - you are in college now and you are speaking like a 2 year old??? really????

She may have not used the correct grammer, but what does that have to do with anything? I don't know about anybody else, but i could careless what I sound like when i'm upset. I think ABC neededs to be investigated. The school has recieved funds to do add-ons but yet there isn't any financial aid available for the single mother that stopped working to be able to attend school full-time. Therefore, whenever she/he is able to recieve a lump sum of money it has to go toward lights, water and gas for the next 4 months. It has to go towards school uniforms, diapers and anything else their child may need. It's not all about the money, it's about making sure that my children have a roof over their head, lights, water and gas. So, so what if my grammer does not meet your standards. I got other things to worry about and it "aint" making sure you happy with the way I talk.

You KNOW that our great highness prince BO just made more cuts to the military - and our fine soldiers are suffering because of it. All the while we are POURING $$$$$$$$$$ to the muslim countries, who, in turn, take the money to buy weapons to kill our troops. November can't come quick enough.

Tens of thousands of veterans across the money are in the same boat because the Post 9/11 GI Bill hasn't paid out in well over a month to almost all enrolled in it. Veterans are losing cars and homes, and having to quit school. I guess they don't count though since FOX16 has ignored tips on the story.

Well hello be good! You spoke of education to me on another post; remember me? There are 3 ways to spell the word you used between "youth.. and ...would"; you used the wrong one my friend. charlie; I use the word "ain't" often. I did not use it in Comp papers at college, but I use it in everyday speech. It is in Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, and has a whole paragraph devoted to it. Ain't that a hoot! I've no knowledge however if it is in Oxford's dictionary though. I'm a Yankee by birth, and partially educated in both the South and North, ( and out West ), and I've always used it myself. I took 2 IQ tests online and came up with 128 and 130. Not too shabby. My high school GPA was 1.69. Barely passed. Didn't like school, teachers, or authority. Plus had girlfriend problems and dad was in Nam for a year. At PTC, where I graduated with Honors in 2003, my GPA was 3.78. Ain't that something! Anyway gang; I hope for the students sake, they get this figured out at ABC. If any of the students are like that one kid in one of my computer classes was; they need the money for expensive fancy underwear they can show off while wearing those expensive pants that hang halfway down their a**'s and look as if they are carrying a pant load! LOL Peace be good and charlie!

I am a working mother and student at ABC and most of the comments I must agree on. The students are not properly educated and the leadership has totally fail. I been a student a year and since I been there its been a nightmare. Students bring crying kids into the classroom. Admission and administration lies to the student and blame everything on system failure. Student don't have proper internet to use on campus. Paper is not available for student but include in fees. ABC needs to clean house both student and facilities. You must seek the drama that is allowed on a Baptist College. God please work on and bless that college.

"we ain't got no money yet" - maybe they should withhold their refunds until they can speak proper grammer.
