LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Family and friends gather outside the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis to remember the 21-year-old who died while in the custody of Jonesboro Police.
The Arkansas state medical examiner says Chavis Carter committed suicide back in July, writing the bullet went through the right side of his brain and left out the other. But by phone Monday, the attorney representing Carter's family says there are gaps in the investigation.
"Normally what you have is two people telling two stories, but unfortunately here Chavis was killed that night," said Memphis attorney Ben Irwin.
Jonesboro authorities say Carter shot himself in the head with a concealed gun while still in handcuffs. Police didn't find the gun during their two pat downs, which was seen on video.
But what police dash cam video doesn't show is the moment the gun went off, which authorities have not released.
Irwin wants to see that piece of video to hopefully answer more questions.
"What we do know is that he was in the custody of the Jonesboro police department. They have a duty to protect him from others and himself and they clearly failed at that," said Irwin.
