Ark. inmate shoots, wounds self in county jail

Crittenden County jail authorities say an inmate shot and wounded himself in the knee with a pistol smuggled into the jail.
WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) - Crittenden County jail authorities say an inmate shot and wounded himself in the knee with a pistol smuggled into the jail.

Chief Deputy Mike Callender told WMC-TV that Robert Turner Jr. was not seriously injured and was back in his cell Monday after shooting himself with a .25-caliber pistol on Saturday.

Callender says the weapon was brought into the jail by one of three former jailers who were arrested a week ago for smuggling items into the jail. He says the former jailers allegedly smuggled cell phones and tobacco into the jail and that investigators "didn't ask the right questions" by failing to question them about weapons.
