WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) - Crittenden County jail authorities say an inmate shot and wounded himself in the knee with a pistol smuggled into the jail.

Chief Deputy Mike Callender told WMC-TV that Robert Turner Jr. was not seriously injured and was back in his cell Monday after shooting himself with a .25-caliber pistol on Saturday.

Callender says the weapon was brought into the jail by one of three former jailers who were arrested a week ago for smuggling items into the jail. He says the former jailers allegedly smuggled cell phones and tobacco into the jail and that investigators "didn't ask the right questions" by failing to question them about weapons.

LOL Say it isn't so. Jailers smuggling guns into jails. I spent about 6 months in a county jail on a no bond order. The only thing I had a problem getting was the things that were due me buy law. Medicines, By-pap, ostomy supplies. I had a lighter, smokes, pot,and alcohol. New several of the jailers. Partied with them on the street. You'd be surprised who gets to be in charge. Of course that was a dozen years ago. Maybe things will get better.
