CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - A woman who adopted her granddaughter after her son's death in Iraq stabbed the 7-year-old girl in the chest, then set fire to their home in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said Monday.

Janice Robbins, 63, left a suicide note in her pickup truck before killing her granddaughter, Abby Robbins, and herself on Saturday, Faulkner County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Andy Shock said. In the note, she wrote that she didn't want to leave the girl behind.

Robbins stabbed the girl once in the chest had no wounds herself. The coroner determined that the both were killed by the smoke or fire, after finding soot in the girl's lungs that indicated she was breathing while the home burned, officials said.

Abby's father, Army Staff Sgt. William T. "Terry" Robbins, was shot and killed by a fellow soldier in Iraq in 2005 during a dispute over alcohol. Shock said Janice Robbins had another son who had also died.

Janice Robbins had adopted Abby, with the process becoming final in 2010.

At a news conference Monday, officials said there were no indications Robbins was in financial trouble, and investigators were trying to find out if she had been getting counseling for depression. They said the results of toxicological testing, which would show if she was taking medication, will take weeks.

Shock said it appears Robbins planned her and her granddaughter's deaths very deliberately. She left the suicide note in the pickup truck, and taped an envelope to the side of the truck with keys so authorities could get inside, he said. She also left a plastic bin in the truck that contained her will and other personal effects.

"Seems to me that this was not an overnight reaction," Shock said.

Authorities said the deaths surprised people who knew the family. Neighbors told investigators that Robbins and her granddaughter were seen walking dogs earlier in the week.

I think more investigation is needed here. It just appears to be too organized. NO ONE noticed the grandmother was off it?? Where is the mother? I'm not so ready to jump on the bandwagon of condemnation until there is more investigation. The stabbing is an unsual aspect. Toxicology results may help. IF [big if] grandma was off her rocker we can not judge the eternal factor. I think more facts are needed at this time than judgements.

I agree with amp. This woman is nothing more than a murderer. At 7 years old, this girl had a rough life but had a lot of time to move forward. Its sad that a selfish grandmother had to change that. Like I said before, to hell she shall go. Its not my rule, but its a good one.

Speaking only formyself , I don't care how much I may want to die or how much it would hurt me to leave my grandaughter behind. There is no way in hell I could look at that sweet little child and then plunge a knife into her. You would think a person that did not resent you, and ( maybe she did )would at least have a little compassion for the child by doing something less gruesome. I don't know ! Just thinking out loud .

It amazes me how some of you are defending this murderer?? She could have gave this child a chance to live. She had already lived her life if she was ready to go then so be it.Just because she was old doesnt mean she has the right to kill. She is no better than cassie anthony.

It's so sad that these 2 people lost their life. Where is the mother? Could she have been a part of this tragedy? I hope a thorough investigation is done to rule out foul play. I pray for the family to be comforted. God rest their souls.

Just because the grandmother if that is what people want to call her was going something then she should have taken only herself. People that takes others are just plain overbearing and do not have the other persons best interest in mind. SELFISH! MEAN!

I wouldn't say she is going to hell. She really loved that child so much she couldn't bare to leave her "alone". I remember begging my grandmother once when she was sick: "Please don't leave me." We don't know what conversations they had. She must have thought she had a good reason. God Bless them both.

This happened real close to my house. It's sad. I would also bet that if those of us that live here don't know what happened the rest of the world doesn't either. As for going to hell. I'd say that would be between her and her God. Not you or I. God please be merciful on their souls.
