WASHINGTON, D.C. - An Arkansas 7th grader is representing the state in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee underway through Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

Christian Boekhout, 12, who attends Hot Springs Intermediate School, is one of just 54 students remaining in the nationwide competition, culled down from more than 5 million participants.

The top 10 finalists will compete in the May 22 final round, moderated by Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek.

This is the third year in a row that Boekhout has represented Arkansas in the National Geographic Bee.

He plays first chair alto saxophone and has participated in the Junior Engineering Olympics for two years. He hopes to travel the world.

The Bee will air on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD on Thursday night at 7 o'clock and later on public television stations (see your local listings).
